Whimper

I
Do you ever whimper
sometimes
when you are alone—
And then wonder
Where did that strange sound come from?—
Before you notice it was you
and your quiet little voice
alone
only
in the dark?

II
Sometimes all I wish for
is substance—
to be a little more
than this whimper in the dark
To be touched
and to know it
To be heard
To be seen as more than
the hush of night
Because whispers pass lightly
and are gone
But I do not want to fade
with such ease

III
Draws you in, slowly
that sound—
like a plea
So sad it breaks your heart
just one more time
But then—
if you can take no more—
that dove breast cry can only
turn you away
Regret runs beside you
and the light of hope fades
until you can hear the whimper no longer
